Phoenix police investigate homicide after body foundPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Phoenix police say a man who was found dead on the side of the road Wednesday morning appears to be the victim of a homicide.
The body of 35-year-old Kevin Ore was found in the area of Seventh Street and Las Palmaritas Drive, which is north of Northern Avenue. A passerby reported finding the body in the neighborhood about 5:45 a.m.
Phoenix police and firefighters responded, and Ore was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are not releasing any information about his injuries, but neighbors say he was shot in the head.
Diana Ace said Ore's body was found in her side yard.
"We are going to be extra vigilant because as far as we're concerned, there's a murder in this neighborhood," she said.
It is unknown whether Ore's death occurred at the location where his body was found or he was dropped off there, police said.
He was last seen leaving Rum Runners Bar near Seventh Street and Butler Drive, where he worked as a bartender. Ore's friends said he wasn't working Tuesday night, but had stayed to help close and was in good spirits when he left about 2 a.m. Wednesday.
Paul Mayfield said he and Ore were playing trivia at the bar along with Ore's brother and friends.
Ore always walked home from work along Las Palmaritas Drive, Mayfield added.
Friends suspected he might have been targeted by someone thinking he was leaving his workplace with cash.
Ore's friends also told 3TV that he had recently been given a clean bill of health by doctors after a battle with stage IV melanoma.
Neighbors expressed their sympathy for Ore's family.
"These people need closure," Ace said. "They need to know whoever did this. They need to know. It's not fair. It's not right."
Ore's father is retired from the Phoenix Fire Department.
Police said there are no known witnesses at this time. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Phoenix Police Department Violent Crimes Bureau at 602-262-6141 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
