PHOENIX – A fast-moving fire destroyed two automotive businesses in east Phoenix Sunday evening.

The Phoenix Fire Department responded to a report of tires on fire near Van Buren and 36th streets at about 5:15 p.m.

Smoke could be seen for miles.

Firefighters said the flames started in Sabrena Tire and Auto Center and minutes later strong winds spread the fire to All State Tire Shop.

They tried to save the buildings but it was too dangerous. As firefighters were attempting to ventilate the roof, it began to collapse.

"The roof was caving in as our firefighters were on top," said Capt. Tony Mure.

All the firefighters evacuated the building and went to a defensive strategy.

"No building's worth any civilian life or any firefighter's life," Mure said.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to only two structures.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury but didn't need to go to the hospital.

Investigators are trying to determine what sparked the flames.
