WELLTON, Ariz. -- Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents apprehended nine suspected smugglers and seized 382 pounds of marijuana on Thursday.
Agents patrolling near Sentinel in Southern Arizona were tracking footprints of a group of suspected smugglers heading toward Interstate 8. Once agents spotted the group and approached the area, the group scattered.
Agents apprehended seven men and seized eight makeshift backpacks of marijuana worth an estimated $191,000, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Agents later apprehended two more individuals from the same group who were found walking along I-8.
Agents reported that the smugglers were wearing camouflage clothing and carpet over their shoes to make tracking more difficult.
The marijuana and smugglers were turned over to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
