Man hit, killed crossing street in west Phoenix

PHOENIX – A 64-year-old man died after he was hit by a car while crossing a street in west Phoenix Thursday night.

Phoenix police said Abelardo Rivera-Contreras was crossing 83rd Avenue north of Indian School Road outside of the unmarked crosswalk when he was struck by a northbound car at approximately 6:15 p.m.

The 27-year-old male driver remained at the scene. Police said he may have been impaired.

Rivera-Contreras was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
