Police identify victim in Phoenix homicide; suspect on the loose

PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are looking for a suspect in a shooting the left one man dead.

According to Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson, officers responded to a shooting call in the area of 15th Pierce streets around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Upon arrival, they found a 27-year-old Hispanic man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound. While other officers searched for the suspect, the victim was transported down the street so paramedics could treat him.

The man, later identified as Juan Ortiz Canales, died from his injuries.

Detectives are still trying to piece together exactly what happened and identify the shooter.

The suspect is described only as a Hispanic man between 20 and 35 years old. Investigators have no other information about him. It's not clear if Canales and the suspect were acquainted.
