More third-party providers will offer driver's licenses, IDsPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Arizonans will soon have more options for obtaining a driver's license or identification card.
The Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division announced Friday that it is increasing the number of authorized third-party providers able to process driver's licenses and IDs.
Third-party providers have been processing title and registration transactions for more than 20 years but only a limited few were also offering driver's license services, according to the MVD.
The MVD is able to expand the program thanks to the 2013 passage of House Bill 2183.
Of the 147 third-party providers statewide, seven are now processing Class D and G licenses, and four more are scheduled to expand operations by mid June, according to the MVD. Additional businesses are expected to offer the services later this year.
The third-party providers can also conduct driving tests.
Private companies contract with the Arizona Department of Transportation to offer MVD services and have to meet requirements set by Arizona law.
"ADOT oversees the businesses to ensure that stringent operational requirements are being followed and the Motor Vehicle Division provides authorized third-party employees with extensive training to assure proficiency is demonstrated by the businesses," MVD Director Stacey Stanton said in a statement. "Customers can feel confident using authorized third-party offices."
GG & D Financial & Check Cashing LLC in west Phoenix is one of the businesses adding driver's license services.
"GG & D Financial is looking forward to continuing its partnership with the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division to offer this expanded service," Director of Operations Ron Neagle said in a statement. "We believe that both new and existing customers will greatly appreciate the convenience of driver license services being available at the same locations as the existing title and registration services."
The business will begin processing licenses on May 27.
Other businesses scheduled to expand operations are: Third Party MVD Services, Inc. in Mesa (April 28), Montes Multiple Services LLC in Yuma (May 12), and and Ginger's Title & Auto in Sierra Vista (June 9).
