Police identify man fatally shot in Phoenix apartmentPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX – Police are investigating a fatal shooting inside a Phoenix apartment Thursday afternoon.
A man called police to check on his son at an apartment complex near Cave Creek Road and Sweetwater Avenue at approximately 1:30 p.m., according to Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos.
The caller said he was on the phone with his son when he heard a "scuffle" and he was unable to reach his son after that.
Officers entered the apartment and located Christopher J. Winston, 22, dead from gunshot wounds.
While officers were on the scene, an 18-year-old man who lives in the apartment and a female friend returned and were questioned by officers and homicide detectives.
They told police that Winston entered the apartment armed with a gun and began demanding items of value. The two men struggled and Winston was shot.
Martos said the male resident is considered an investigative lead. After questioning, he was released from police custody.
Martos said the investigation is ongoing and the case will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for a decision on whether charges will be filed.
According to Arizona Department of Corrections records, a man by the same name and age was released from prison in August after serving time for armed robbery.
