Lost dog returns home after five monthsPosted: Updated:
SCOTTSDALE -- The Norris family celebrated the Christmas holiday along with the crowds at Tempe Town Lake's annual boat parade but when they got home their dog was gone.
"We were looking around for Haywire and he wasn't there," said 12-year-old Katelyn Norris.
Haywire, a 2-year-old pit bull, was spooked by the fireworks and escaped the backyard almost five months ago.
"I posted on Craigslist and continuously checked the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control Pet Harbor website," said Norris.
Then a month ago, a certain pit bull showed up in Trish Aquilino's South Scottsdale neighborhood.
"When I found Haywire in our street he was eating cat food I knew I had to help him," said Aquilino.
Aquilino is a dog lover and even a volunteer at Lost Dogs Arizona.
She did some searches and it wasn't until she searched back to December that she found Katelyn's post just this week.
She sent pictures to the Norris family and they determined the dog belonged to them.
So a plan was hatched to catch that pit bull.
On Wednesday night, they set a trap, baited with sausage and chicken. And Thursday morning, there he was.
Katelyn and her mother showed up bright and early in the morning to pick up their dog.
Haywire was still in survivor mode and it took him a couple minutes to recognize his family but once he did he started whining and got really excited.
"I mean I love him with all my heart," said Norris.
