PHOENIX -- It's that time of year when we start planning our summer vacations. But experts say some travel destinations could be riskier than others.
Dr. Joe Zachariah specializes in travel-related illnesses and infectious disease. He gave us some tips on staying healthy during your vacation, even here in our state.
"When you go to the high country, it's altitude sickness," he says. "So acclimatize yourself gradually over 24 hours or so."
He also points out that heat stroke can be a risk, so make sure to drink plenty of water. A good rule is to drink one 8-ounce glass of water per mile that you hike.
We asked Dr. Zachariah about staying safe on cruises, especially after recent health scares on cruise ships. He says your best bet is to keep your hands clean. "Any activity where your hands are coming to your mouth, make sure you wash your hands before you eat, before you drink, before you brush your teeth."
If you're traveling to Mexico, keep heat stroke in mind there as well. Be careful of the food you eat and water you drink. And that goes for anytime you visit another country.
The U.S. government has a special online section with tips about medical safety while traveling. It includes information about vaccinations, insurance and finding medical care overseas.
