SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Maricopa County Sheriff's Animal Crimes detectives arrested a man after eight dogs were found neglected at his Surprise home.

Skyler Kelton, 32, faces 16 counts of animal cruelty over the improper care of seven puppies and one female dog.

The sheriff's office received a tip about the neglect a couple of months ago and detectives visited Kelton's property near Dixileta Drive and 168th Avenue. They discovered the dogs were underweight and attempted to work with Kelton to correct the issue.

Detectives said Kelton hadn't addressed the problems and the dogs were seized.

Detectives said the animals were in dire need of food and water along with medical attention.

After the dogs were medically cleared, they were taken to Sheriff Joe Arpaio's facility for abused and neglected animals where they are being cared for by inmates.
