RED ROCK, Ariz. -- A Marana woman was killed and her 5-year-old son was injured after their SUV sideswiped a flatbed truck in Red Rock, according to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.

Shortly after 9 a.m. April 4, a 53-year-old Red Rock man reported that he had been involved in a car crash.

The man was reportedly driving his 1995 Dodge flatbed truck north on Owl Head Ranch Road near Grand Valley Drive when he approached a curve in the roadway and was sideswiped by a southbound 2001 Kia SUV. Sheriff's investigators determined the Kia had crossed the center line.

The man told authorities that when he stopped to render aid, he found the 33-year-old female driver unresponsive and her son with a laceration on his head. The boy was in a car seat in the back seat of the SUV.

The woman was extricated from the SUV and transported by a helicopter to a Tucson area hospital, where she later died. The boy was airlifted to the same hospital and later released.

The truck driver was not injured.

Speed and inattention appeared to be factors in the crash but impairment did not, according to the sheriff's office.
