TUCSON, Ariz. – A 19-year-old University of Arizona student died after falling while climbing a tower on the roof of a residence hall early Friday morning.

Michael Evan Anderson and another student were climbing the metal frame of a 20-foot-high cooling unit on the roof of the Colonia de la Paz residence hall when Anderson fell, according to Sgt. Filbert Barrera with the University of Arizona Police Department.

The other student called 911 shortly before 4 a.m. Emergency responders from the Tucson Fire Department attempted resuscitation.

Barrera said the students gained access to the roof by climbing an exterior wall of the three-story dorm.

Barrera said preliminary reports indicate the fall was an accident, but police are still investigating.

Anderson was a freshman from Mission Viejo, Calif.

Counselors have been called in to provide support for friends and classmates of the victim and students in the dorm, which is located near Highland Avenue and Fourth Street.

The death comes just days after an Arizona State University student died after falling from an off-campus apartment building. Naomi McClendon, 18, fell from a 10th floor balcony early Sunday morning.

Tempe police said McClendon appeared to be very intoxicated when she arrived at the apartment building near Rural Road and Apache Boulevard.
