D-backs' 18-inch, $25 corn dog taste testPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Nothing says baseball like hot dogs, nachos and popcorn. And fans of the Arizona Diamondbacks will have plenty of food choices at the snack bar at Chase Field this year.
Not only is Monday opening day of the Major League Baseball season, it's also the home opener for our Arizona Diamondbacks!
So batter up! And speaking of batter, there's one new menu item guaranteed to get everyone talking his year: the giant corn dog, called the D-Bat corn dog!
Not all corn dogs are created equal. The D-Bat corn dog measures 18 inches in length, and will set you back $25. But it should easily feed a family of three.
The dog's creator, Chef Snoke, talked to Ryan O'Donnell Monday about what goes into this dog. "I wanted something that was really going to impress the fans this year and knock people back on their heels," he said. "I thought, everybody loves a corn dog, so I'll make it huge, stuff it with some cheddar cheese and jalapeno, and wrap it in lots of bacon."
It's then battered and deep-fried and served on a big bed of french fries. You'll also get a side of spicy mustard and chipotle ketchup.
Ryan taste-tested the the corn dog for us and gave us an enthusiastic thumbs-up. "It's good," he says. "It's not as spicy as I thought. I expected it to be a little spicier."
Fans at the ballpark can also try the Venom Dog, a habanero sausage topped with guacamole, pico de gallo, black beans and sour cream. Also don't miss this vegan option: tamales from the Tucson Tamale Company. The Bisbee Tamale is stuffed with soy chorizo, potatoes and pinto beans.
