Serious accidents on Loop 101 shut down freewayPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- The Loop 101 Eastbound was shut down Sunday evening due to two serious crashes, one involving a Phoenix police officer.
It happened near the Loop 101 and 7th street exit.
DPS said there were five vehicles involved in two accidents.
First, they said while a Phoenix detective was pulling over a car to the right lane, a pickup truck rear-ended him and then side swiped the car he was pulling over.
Around the same time, DPS said a silver SUV was slowing down on the HOV lane when a motorcycle hit the SUV.
The driver of that motorcycle was thrown from the bike. DPS said there was a 30 to 40 mile per hour difference between the motorcycle and that slowing SUV when the motorcyclist hit that SUV.
According to DPS, the detective who was rear-ended is in stable condition, but the motorcyclist is in critical condition.
DPS said they are treating the scene as if it were a homicide which Raul Garcia with the Arizona Department of Public Safety said is common practice when there is a serious accident.
They want to remind all drivers to slow down when they see an emergency vehicle and be careful on the roads.
