PHOENIX – A Phoenix track coach is accused of engaging in sexual conduct with a 17-year-old girl.

Bo Joseph Reed, 48, was arrested in Chandler Saturday morning. He faces eight counts of sexual conduct with a minor and one count of luring a minor for sexual exploitation. A judge set Reed's bond at $54,000.

Reed is the victim's track and field coach at Veritas Preparatory Academy near Thomas Road and 56th Street.

Phoenix police were alerted to the alleged sexual conduct by two of the teen's longtime friends, according to Officer James Holmes.

The friends told police that they were concerned for the victim's well-being, saying she had withdrawn from her normal behavior over the last few months and had been spending a lot of time with Reed. They said they logged into the victim's Facebook account and found sexually explicit message exchanges with Reed.

Holmes said detectives contacted the victim and she disclosed several counts of sexual conduct with Reed, primarily between February and March.

Reed was suspended without pay after the school was notified of his arrest, according to a statement from Great Hearts Academies, which runs the charter school.

The statement said, "... we have been told there are no indications of force and no information that would lead police to believe any other students may be involved with Mr. Reed."

The statement also said, "Veritas Prep, as part of its regular hiring practices, conducts extensive background checks on all our employees. We have undertaken our own review to assure that no other inappropriate behavior occurred while Mr. Reed was coaching at our school."

Reed runs Bo Reed Racing in Flagstaff. According to his website, he is a member of the Northern Arizona University Hall of Fame 1988 Men's Cross Country Team, is a former Scottsdale Community College head cross-country and track-and-field coach, and has served as a camp counselor or coach at the NAU Track Camps for over 20 years.
