PHOENIX -- Phoenix police say a sergeant shot and killed a man who assaulted him while he was doing paperwork in his squad car Sunday morning. The sergeant was parked in a vacant lot in the area of 58th Avenue and McDowell Road, near the scene of an early morning apartment fire police were investigating.Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos said that about 8:30 a.m., a man approached the squad car and the sergeant rolled down his window thinking the man had a question.“The individual began having some discussion with our sergeant, which led into an altercation while the sergeant was still seated in his vehicle,” Martos said.At some point, the man reached into the squad car, according to Martos.“Ultimately, the sergeant discharged his weapon striking this particular suspect," he said. The man was reportedly hit at point-blank range and taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.“I believe he was here earlier this morning related to the fire investigation,” Martos said.It is believed he is the same man who got into an argument with a 3TV photographer moments before walking up to the police sergeant.“We do not believe, at least at this point, that the suspect that was shot this morning has any relationship with the arson,” Martos said.Police say they are unsure why the man was being combative.Martos said the sergeant, a 29-year veteran of the department, sustained a minor injury.
