SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- If you want to do some bird watching in your own backyard, you first need to lure the bird there. As former Scottsdale Mayor Sam Campana explained, you can do this inexpensively with some bird-friendly treats.

Campana showed 3TV's Kaley O'Kelley how a strategically placed cut orange can do the trick.

"After I put out citrus, Gila woodpeckers have flown into my yard within thirty minutes," Campana told Cathy Cromwell of Phoenix Home & Garden magazine.

Another option is to hang a pinecone covered in peanut butter and birdseed or cornmeal. Campana's grandkids love making those pinecone feeders for her and her birds.

Campana's yard, which she transformed into the lovely desert habitat that it is today, is featured in this month's edition of the magazine.
