PHOENIX -- Authorities say a teenage boy fatally shot his ex-girlfriend before turning the gun on himself at a north Phoenix home.

Phoenix police say 15-year-old Matthew Bolton and 16-year-old Anastasia "Ana" Greer were both sophomores at Sandra Day O'Connor High School.

They say the murder-suicide occurred at a home of Greer's friend near 43rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road.

"Cause they broke up and he shot her and then he shot himself," said student Kaily Davern.

After hearing that Bolton might have brought a gun to school Friday, the school resource officer tried to track him down on campus and learned he hadn't attended any of his classes. Bolton's mother reportedly told the officer that her son was at home with his older brother.

It's unclear how Bolton got the gun, which was found on a sidewalk near the bodies.

Officers responded to a 911 call of a shooting around noon Friday and found two people dead in the home's front yard from gunshot wounds.

Neighbors say they heard a scream and then shots. They say the girl had gunshot wounds to her chest and the boy a gunshot wound to his face.

"It breaks my heart," Greer's best friend said. "I've known her for six and a half years and she was like a sister to me. I would do anything just to give her a hug one more time but I can't anymore. Everything changed."

While some students were surprised by the news and called Bolton a good kid, others claim he had a history of violent behavior.

"I've heard many things about him that were not pretty," Greer's best friend said.

Students said the boy had choked a different ex-girlfriend in a classroom, a claim police are investigating.
