PHOENIX -- Two police officers were treated for minor smoke inhalation after responding to an apartment fire in Phoenix Thursday afternoon.

The officers were in the area when they noticed smoke coming from the complex near 19th and Peoria avenues.

The officers ran over to help and began clearing units.

Phoenix firefighters responded shortly before 3:30 p.m. and found flames and heavy smoke in a ground floor apartment, according to Phoenix Fire Capt. Ruben Saavedra.

First alarm was requested because the fire was quickly spreading to the second floor, Saavedra said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before it spread to other units.

The officers were treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital as a precaution.

No residents were injured, but a dog was treated by firefighters.

Saavedra said Thursday it was unclear how many residents were displaced by the fire.
