PHOENIX (AP) -- A Phoenix police officer wounded in a shootout that left his undercover partner dead along with the suspect they were pursuing was released from a hospital Wednesday.

Detective Albert J. Casados, 37, was shot once on his right side in Monday afternoon's gunbattle in west Phoenix with an ex-convict wanted for attempted murder, police said.

Casados and Detective John Hobbs were conducting surveillance and were spotted by the suspect who attempted to flee and wrecked his car before engaging in a shootout with the officers near a busy Phoenix intersection.

Hobbs, 43 and a 21-year police veteran, exchanged fire with the suspect as he lay bleeding on the pavement. He died hours later at a Phoenix hospital from gunshot wounds.

The suspect - 28-year-old William Thornton - was declared dead at the scene.

Police said Thornton was wanted on a probation violation warrant after having been released from prison in January, where he served time for a drug conviction and resisting arrest.

In addition to the warrant, police said Thornton was a key suspect in the attempted murder of a man who was shot in the chest on Feb. 25.

Hobbs and Casados, a nine-year police veteran, were members of the department's Major Offenders Bureau tasked with tracking down and arresting violent offenders and fugitives.

Police said neither detective was wearing a bullet proof vest at the time of the shooting.

Hobbs is survived by his wife and three young children. His funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Christ's Church of the Valley in Peoria.
