PHOENIX -- Gov. Jan Brewer is asking that state flags be lowered until sunset Tuesday and again on the day of his burial to honor a Phoenix police officer fatally wounded in a shootout with a suspect on Monday.

Brewer says Detective John Hobbs dedicated his life to protecting his community and making it a better place to live.

"It is a stark and saddening reminder that, for our men and women in law enforcement, no day on the job is ever without danger," Brewer says in the statement.

Details on services for Hobbs, who was a 21-year veteran of the department, are pending.
