PHOENIX -- Late Monday evening, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton spoke out about the officer involved shooting earlier in the day.

One Phoenix police officer died and another was left in critical condition after a shootout Monday that also left the suspect dead. That suspect was reportedly wanted on a felony warrant.

Mayor Stanton called this a very sad day for the City of Phoenix, and a very sad day for the Phoenix Police Department.

"Hug your loved ones a little closer tonight," Stanton said. "Our department has lost one of their finest, and there's another officer fighting for his life inside St. Joseph's Hospital."

"In Phoenix we love and support our police officers," he continued. "Today is a tragic reminder that our officers risk their lives for us every single day."

"We are praying hard, praying hard for the family of our deceased hero," Stanton said. "And we are praying for the officer fighting for his life."

"If you see an officer tonight, tomorrow, or anytime soon, please tell that officer thank you for all you do," he said. "These officers risk their lives for us every single day and we must remember that every single day as well."
