PHOENIX (AP) -- A 20-year-old woman has been released pending trial on a child abuse charge stemming from the discovery of her toddler son in a backyard where he'd spent the night outside alone amid intermittent rains.

Melynie Marie Susnkewa was ordered released Sunday after she appeared before a Maricopa County Superior Court commissioner. Her child is with Child Protective Services.

An attorney will be appointed to represent Susnkewa.

She was arrested after her mother contacted authorities after police released information about a child found by a man in his backyard Saturday morning.

Police say in an affidavit that Susnkewa had been drinking Friday night and left a party with the child.

Editorial note: Police spelled the mother's last name Susunkewa, but court documents show it as Susnkewa. azfamily.com has chosen to go with the court's spelling.
