Discovery Triangle created the initiative to address the lack of access to fresh and healthy food between downtown Phoenix and downtown Tempe, according to Don Keuth, president of the corporation. It will also help those who depend on public transportation.
“Although we’re trying to help with economic development issues,” Keuth said, “if we don’t have a healthy community, we’re not helping it reach its full potential.”
The Fresh Express bus is the first of its kind in the western U.S., he added. It will also provide assistance with preparing food, as well as health screenings through Arizona State University’s College of Nursing.
The bus will operate twice a week and make five stops a day, beginning and ending each day at a school in the Balsz School District.
Discovery Triangle had a launch event planned for Tuesday morning at Brunson-Lee Elementary School in Phoenix. The launch included a scheduled appearance by Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton to hand out bags of apples to school kids.
