Man wins $1 million with Chandler Powerball ticketPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Talk about something to celebrate. A man who bought a Powerball ticket only at the urging of his wife, found himself an instant winner, when he discovered his ticket was worth a million bucks.
Alvin Yazzie, an electrician, lives in New Mexico, but he actually purchased his Powerball ticket from a Chandler Circle K.
When he first heard that the $425 million jackpot winning ticket was sold in California, he thought he was out of luck.
But it wasn't until he checked his ticket online that he realized he had won $1 million, Powerball's second prize!
"I saw the first number and said, alright, I got one," Alvin recalls. "Then checked the second number and got two. Then three, four, and thought, alright! Four's good! Then I saw the fifth one and said, alright! Five! Then I checked the Powerball. Not the Powerball, but I said five, five is good. Now what do I win? I looked, checked my internet and found out I won a million."
He says his wife was skeptical at first. "I told her and she didn't believe me," he says. "And she checked the numbers. I had to send her a picture of the ticket itself. She checked the numbers, checked the date, checked the numbers, back and forth like I was doing. And sure enough, it was true!"
Yazzie said he and his wife celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in December, but now they will be able to really celebrate with a vacation to Hawaii. His advice to players is to "Just keep playing; your number will come up."
Yazzie tells 3TV he will not quit his job, but will use the money to pay bills and take some trips.
"Meeting with Alvin and giving him his $1 million winning check was an honor," said Karen Bach, director of budget, products and communications for the Arizona Lottery. "We are thrilled Arizona has reached 30 $1 million Powerball second prize winners and we expect to have many more winners in the future."
