CHANDLER, Ariz. -- A suspect drunk driver is behind bars after plowing his truck through the wall of a Chandler studio apartment injuring the two people who were asleep inside early Tuesday morning.
It happened just before 2 a.m. in the area of Ray Road and Arizona Avenue.
Police estimate that the driver, Alexander Trujillo, 20, was going between 40 and 45 mph when his truck rammed through the wall of the apartment where a couple slept.
Both victims suffered cuts and bruises when bricks from the wall rained down on them. They were taken to a local hospital where they were treated and released.
Angelina Romo, one of the residents, said she is thankful to be alive. She told 3TV's Jill Galus that had she been asleep on the mattress rather than the couch, she would have been killed.
Video from the scene showed a tow truck hauling the pickup through the shattered wall and out of the apartment.
Work crews boarded up the wall of the demolished apartment. The couple won't be able to live there any time soon.
One neighbor said more lights are needed in part the apartment complex where the crash occurred, but conceded that "I don't think it's going to help if they're drinking."
Trujillo was injured in the crash, as well. He was treated at a local hospital and released. Police immediately arrested him and booked him on suspicion of DUI. Additional charges are possible.
