PHOENIX (AP) -- An Arizona House committee has approved a new fund and committee to create a memorial site honoring the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots who died in the Yarnell Hill Fire.
The committee approved House Bill 2624 unanimously Monday. It would allocate $500,000 to create a memorial site to honor the firefighters. It also creates a committee to oversee the memorial and administer the fund.
The committee would include relatives of the firefighters killed, as well as state representatives and officials from the state parks board. The bill also would establish a fund of appropriated and donated money for maintaining the memorial.
All but one of the 20 Hotshots on the Prescott-based crew perished June 30 when flames overtook their position near Yarnell.
