PHOENIX -- A 7-year-old boy died Sunday after he was hit by a truck while riding his scooter in Phoenix, according to police.

It occurred in the area of 17th Street and Broadway Road.

Phoenix police said the boy died at a hospital.

"Sadly ... the child was not wearing any protective equipment," Phoenix police spokesman Officer James Holmes said.

The boy was from out of town and visiting family in the neighborhood, according to Holmes.

"There are no stop signs so people go by like crazy, and we've got a lot of kids around here," one neighbor said.

However, police said the truck driver did not appear to be speeding and told investigators he did not see the child.

Police also said impairment does not appear to be a factor.

The truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

Carlos Ochoa, who was in the area at the time, said it is a sad reminder of how suddenly an accident can happen.

"What can you do? You just have to try to be careful," he said. "We are very careful with our granddaughter. We try to make sure when she's outside, we are holding her by her hand."
