Suspects sought in carjacking attempt, assault at Mesa apartment complexPosted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -- Police are searching for four suspects involved in the assault and attempted robbery of two people outside their Mesa apartment.
Shortly after 7 p.m. Jan. 14, two people left their apartment on Southern Avenue near Horne Drive to get food, when two men who had been sitting on an electric box nearby approached them and demanded their car keys, according to the Mesa Police Department.
Two other men then got out of an SUV and assisted with the carjacking attempt, police said.
At least one of the four suspects was armed with a handgun and shot one of the victims, causing life-threatening injuries. The other victim was struck in the head with a blunt object, possibly the handgun, police said.
A .40-caliber shell casing was found at the scene and a handgun was found buried in gravel in a church parking lot west of the apartment complex, police said. The gun had been reported stolen in a residential burglary in Phoenix.
The suspects, all described as Hispanic men, were seen running west out of the apartment complex.
Police said two of the suspects were captured on video surveillance after hopping a wall separating the church where the gun was found and the parking lot of a business.
Two of the suspects are believed to be in their early 20s. They are both described as being about 6 feet tall and having muscular or larger builds, black hair and facial scruff. They were wearing black hooded sweatshirts at the time.
The SUV is described as gold or brown in color, possibly a Jeep Cherokee. A white Chrysler sedan might also have been involved, police said.
