PHOENIX -- Warm design elements can turn a utilitarian kitchen into a comfortable space. But those elements don't have to cost a fortune to look amazing.

Scottsdale designer Britany Simon, the runner-up on season seven of HGTV Design Star, says butcher block might be just the ticket, especially if you stain it.

For her own kitchen, Simon picked up a butcher block at IKEA and stained it a gorgeous chocolate brown to give it some character.

"We wanted to bring some warmth into the space," she said.

Whether your island is industrial style like Simon's or similar to your cabinetry, using butcher block rather than the same counter tops that are in the rest of the kitchen creates an interesting focal point.
