CHANDLER -- A man was in critical condition Saturday evening after he was struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle in Chandler.

It occurred on Chandler Boulevard at Kingston Street, just west of McQueen Road.

Witnesses told police the bicyclist darted out of an alley and onto the busy road. After the collision, he was ejected from the bike and flew over the westbound SUV, witnesses said.

Police said the 20-year-old man was not wearing a helmet.

"It sounded like a tire exploding," said Cody Brown, who called 9-1-1. "The driver gets out and she starts screaming, 'Is he OK? Is he OK?' "

Brown said he ran over to the scene to stop traffic, and police began arriving about 30 seconds later.

"He was just bleeding; bleeding from his head, his ears and nose," Brown recalled.

He was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The collision was still under investigation Saturday evening, but police did not believe speed or impairment were factors. Police also said it appeared the driver did not commit any traffic violations.
