GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Police have released the 9-1-1 tapes in the death of a man who was allegedly strangled by his teenage girlfriend during sex.

Jessica Burlew, 16, faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of her 43-year-old boyfriend, Jason Ash.

She was arrested in January after the man was found dead in an apartment near Olive and 63rd avenues.

Burlew's mother called 9-1-1 from a neighbor's cell phone, telling a dispatcher she had just returned from a quick trip to the store to find Ash not breathing. She told police she found him in a bed with his pants undone and an electrical cord around his neck.

Burlew reportedly called her mother, saying she and Ash were involved in a consensual sex act involving strangulation and the man had died.

"They were playing a sex game," she told the dispatcher. "She said they got in a fight and he was hitting her."

The woman also told the dispatcher the man had cuts all over his body and that the couple was into mutilation.

When asked how old her daughter's boyfriend was, the woman first said he was 28 years old then guessed he looked about 35 years old.

Police said Burlew fled the scene while her mother was calling 9-1-1 but later returned to a neighbor's apartment wearing a burka as an apparent disguise. Neighbors recognized her by her facial piercings and detectives took her into custody.

According to Maricopa County Superior Court documents, Burlew said Ash did not say their "safety word." She reportedly told police they would often engage in such acts before sex.

Burlew also reportedly told police that after she strangled Ash, she began cutting him with a razor blade in an attempt to get a response and continued to cut him in order to relieve her stress.

According to court documents, police found medical paperwork in Burlew's bedroom that addressed a self-mutilation incident.

Burlew's mother said the teen has a history of cutting herself "as a release," according to court paperwork.

The teen is also technically a victim because she was too young to consent to sex with Ash.
