State worker found dead at Chandler canal

CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Police have released the name of a state worker who died Friday while cleaning out an area of a runoff a canal in Chandler.

Fellow workers contacted police and fire personnel after finding Ronald Griffin, 57, at the canal near Hamilton Street and Willis Road. The canal borders the Loop 202 Santan Freeway.

Police said it appears that he may have fallen and hit his head.

Sgt. Joe Favazzo said the death is not suspicious. However, because Griffin was alone at the time, police said they awaiting the cause of death from the Maricopa Medical Examiner's Office.
