Inmate assaults employee at Florence prison

FLORENCE, Ariz. -- The Meadows Unit at the Arizona State Prison Complex - Eyman in Florence was locked down after an inmate assaulted an employee Thursday morning, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections.

Spokesman Bill Lamoreaux said the assault occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. Prison staff immediately restrained and secured the inmate suspected of the assault. 

The employee was taken to an off-site medical facility for treatment and evaluation. Lamoreaux said the employee's injuries appear to be serious but not life-threatening.   

The names of the inmate and employee have not been released.

Lamoreaux said a criminal investigation is underway and the department will pursue appropriate charges, pending the outcome of the investigation.
