Police believe father ran over, killed 1-year-old son in Casa GrandePosted: Updated:
CASA GRANDE, Ariz. -- Police believe a father accidentally ran over his baby son, killing him as he backed his truck out of his driveway.
It happened Tuesday night at a home in the area of Ninth Street and Brown Avenue.
The 1-year-old's mother called 911 shortly before 9 p.m., saying that he had been hit by a car and would not wake up.
When officers arrived on the scene, the baby was inside the house with his family.
"The child was unresponsive and showed significant signs of trauma," Officer Thomas Anderson of the Casa Grande Police Department explained in a news release.
The child was rushed to Casa Grande Regional Medical Center. Doctors pronounced him dead shortly after he arrived.
They are still piecing everything together, but at this point, police believe the father hit the child with his truck when he left the home.
What's not clear is why the baby boy was outside by himself and who was supposed to be watching him.
Police also are not sure if the father was aware that he hit his child as he pulled out of the driveway.
Police have not identified the family nor have they released any more details about the incident. Anderson said the investigation is ongoing.
"It is unknown at this time if any charges will be filed in this case," he said.
A neighbor told 3TV's Jill Galus that several children live in the home where this happened. That neighbor also said the parents of those kids are very young.
Casa Grande is a little less than an hour southeast of Phoenix.
