MESA, Ariz. -- Police said one man is dead after a shooting at a Mesa apartment complex Tuesday afternoon.

It happened at 2:10 p.m. at 35 N. May, which is near Dobson Road and Main Street.

When police arrived they found a male victim lying in the parking lot. Video from Chopper 3 showed a red car with its passenger door open and a body covered in a tarp on the ground nearby.

Police located a 20-year-old Hispanic male suspect, who was taken into custody.

The shooting victim was later pronounced dead. He has been identified as Jonathan Martinez, 22.

Landato said the suspect fired at least one shot, hitting Martinez.

During the service of a search warrant, a small-caliber rifle believed to be involved in the shooting was located in an apartment.

Landato said Martinez had an open folding knife on him when he was shot.

Neighbors said they were startled to hear this happened in broad daylight.

"I heard a boom; it's what I heard," said neighbor Sharon McDermott. "I didn't see anybody getting shot or anything like that. But I did see somebody running out of the apartment complex over there, and he was hollering. "
