Peter Pan prequel: Peter and the Starcatcher comes to GammagePosted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Before there was Peter Pan, there was Peter and the Starcatcher. It's a five-time Tony award-winning production, and it's playing at Tempe's Gammage Auditorium this week.
This Peter Pan "prequel" takes a hilarious romp through the Neverland you never knew. It explains how Peter came by both his name and his mistrust of adults; how he met Wendy's mom, how Peter and Captain Hook became enemies, and how Captain Hook became Captain Hook.
Tess Rafols gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the production on Wednesday's Good Morning Arizona.
12 actors play more than 100 characters, and a few of those performers gave us some insight on what the audience can expect.
"It's not actually a musical, even thought there is music in it," says performer John Sanders. "There are only two band members, and they provide not only music, but sound effects. And they're really cool to watch up on the sides along with the show."
"It's a great, innovative story that tells you how your favorite characters became who they are, and how we get that wonderful hero, Peter Pan," says Joey deBettencourt, who plays Peter as a boy.
Peter and the Starcatcher runs through Jan. 19. To learn more or to purchase tickets, visit asugammage.com.
