SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - While some people might think the Barrett-Jackson Car Auction is all about the cars, others say it is about bringing people together.

Musician Bret Michaels was among the enthusiasts out to see the Mercedes, Lamborghinis and muscle cars at the Barrett-Jackson opening gala. He went to reconnect with Glen Schallman, who suffers from an inoperable brain tumor. The two met over Christmas when Schallman was in the hospital.

“It is my bucket list, to meet Bret,” Schallman said. “Best Christmas present ever. I thought it was going to be a very lonely, boring Christmas at the hospital, and this is the biggest surprise ever.”

Michaels has faced his own health issues, from diabetes to a nearly fatal brain hemorrhage.

“I am very thankful and feel blessed that I’m on the good side of the dirt,” the singer said, “after the brain hemorrhage and all the crazy stuff.”

Michaels is also a self-described motorcycle and car freak, though he could not say if he would buy anything from the auction.

“Being here is such a huge event,” he said, “with so many not just awesome people, but people who generally love cars, love motorcycles, boats, RVs. And so we all get together and have a great time.”

Schallman is receiving treatment from the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital, where Michaels said doctors saved his life.
