PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are investigating a jewelry store robbery that turned into a shoot-out.

Police say a woman armed with a gun attempted to rob the Diamond Star Jewelry store at 13th Street and Northern Avenue Tuesday.

"This one is rather unusual in that a woman was the suspect and went in armed, and when she was shot, she also shot the store owner," says Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

The owner of that store grabbed his weapon and there was an exchange of gunfire. Glass shattered all over the sidewalk in front of the store.

The jewelry store owner was shot in the leg, but he's expected to be okay.

The female robbery suspect also sustained several gunshot wounds. Still, she was able to stumble out of the jewelry store and get several blocks away, before police found her collapsed on a sidewalk. Sgt. Thompson said her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Police are not releasing the suspect's name at this time. At last report, she was still in the hospital, but is expected to be booked into jail as soon as she is released.

"We are continuing to look at the scene to gather information from witnesses to see if there are other suspects involved," says Thompson.
