ORACLE, Ariz. -- A woman was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide after allegedly shooting her friend while intoxicated, according to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.

About 8:22 p.m. Saturday, the sheriff's office received a 911 call from 55-year-old Leanor Guitard. She reportedly told the dispatcher she shot a person who was stabbing her.

Within two minutes of being dispatched, deputies arrived at Guitard's home on the 800 block of Evergreen Road in Oracle.

The sheriff's office said deputies knocked on the front door and opened it when no one answered. They yelled inside and still did not receive a response.

The deputies entered the home to search for the shooting victim. They found an adult woman lying on her back in the dining room and Guitard kneeling over her.

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said the woman was shot once in the shoulder/chest area.

Deputies administered CPR until medical personnel arrived and took over. The woman was pronounced dead a short time later.

Deputies seized a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver from the scene, which the sheriff's office said was used to shoot the woman.

Guitard reportedly told deputies she fired the gun at her friend because the woman broke into her house and beat her up.

Guitard was transported to a sheriff's substation for an interview with homicide detectives. The sheriff's office said she declined to answer questions.

She did not have any signs of physical injuries, and no knives were found around her at the scene, the sheriff's office said.

Investigators also did not find any signs that the shooting victim forced entry into the home, Babeu said.

Guitard was booked into Pinal County Jail on suspicion of one count of negligent homicide.

"According to investigators, Leanor Guitard was so intoxicated, she was difficult to understand and had to be assisted when she walked," Babeu said in statement.

"Guitard is the only person who now knows why she shot her friend. She gave investigators conflicting information as far as what occurred. This case is a tragic reminder of how quickly a life can be taken by those who handle firearms irresponsibly," he said.
