QUARTZSITE, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities say a big rig driver is in custody after a hit-and-run crash near the Arizona-California border left two people dead and five others injured.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say David Yates was being held Friday in the La Paz County Jail on suspicion of two counts of second-degree murder, five counts of aggravated assault, leaving the scene of a fatal collision, criminal damage and driving under the influence of drugs.

Authorities say the 55-year-old Yates was arrested about a half mile away from the crash site on Interstate 10 some 20 miles east of Quartzsite.

They say Yates' rig allegedly rear-ended an SUV, which veered off the freeway and rolled at least once about 4 a.m. Friday.

DPS says the two killed were ejected from the vehicle.
