NOGALES, Ariz. -- United States and Mexican authorities discovered an incomplete cross-border tunnel in Nogales Wednesday.

The U.S. Border Patrol Tucson Sector said the tunnel originated in Mexico and extended 133 feet into the U.S., but did not yet open up to the U.S. It was roughly 3 feet in height.

Nogales Border Patrol agents and Mexican police discovered the tunnel during a bi-national border sweep after observing freshly disturbed dirt within the channel floor of a drainage system.

Border Patrol said the tunnel was found near the DeConcini Port of Entry.

The Nogales Border Patrol agents who participated in the sweep were assigned to the International Liaison Unit and the Border Enforcement Security Task Force, an initiative of the Department of Homeland Security involving several law enforcement agencies.
