PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are trying to identify a shooting victim found near a canal in the area of 47th Avenue and Cholla Street.
A patrol officer was in the area at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and heard a gunshot but didn't find anything, according to Sgt. Tommy Thompson. About 30 minutes later, someone called 911 to report finding a body.
Thompson said the body was found on the north side of the canal near Arroyo Elementary School. The body was near the footbridge that's used to cross over the canal.
Thompson said the killing was not related to the school and classes were not affected.
There was no identification on the body. Police said the victim is a male, possibly white or Hispanic, in his late teens or early 20s.
There is no suspect information at this time.
