SCOTTSDALE --  A 74-year-old woman who died after she was struck by a vehicle at a Costco gas pump this weekend is being remembered as a warm and wonderful friend and neighbor.

Patrica Covault was getting gas on Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Costco gas pumps near Hayden Road and Northsight Boulevard in Scottsdale That's when police say a 86-year-old man driving a gray Jeep, ran into Covault's parked car.

Scottsdale police say when Covault stepped out of her car to look at the damage, the elderly driver of the jeep reportedly panicked, and backed over Covault, dragging her a short distance.

Covault was pronounced dead at the scene.

"She's a big loss to the world," says Rosemary Simmons, the victim's neighbor and best friend of 26 years, "You don't find women like her often."

Rosemary says they would argue all the time about who had the best neighbor. "She said she did, and I said I did," says Rosemary. "She was just like a sister to me."

Covault lived in Fountain Hills and friends say she loved helping people in her community by volunteering, picking up neighbors' mail and trash, and always thinking of others.

Covault left behind a husband, two daughters and a grandson.

The 86-year-old driver is not facing charges. Scottsdale police say they consider this an accident.
