SURPRISE, Ariz. – The bullet wound in the leg of a 16-year-old boy who sought help at a McDonald's restaurant Thursday afternoon was self-inflicted, according to the Surprise Police Department.

The wounded teen walked into the fast-food restaurant near Greenway and Reems roads just after 4:30 p.m. and asked someone in the restaurant for help. Police were called to the scene.

On Friday morning, Sgt. Bert Anzini said the teen had accidentally shot himself while putting the gun back in his waistband.

"The juvenile originally provided a false story to police but later admitted he lied so he would not be arrested," Anzini said in an email to 3TV.

No criminal charges have been filed at this time.

The incident remains under investigation.
