GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Glendale police are investigating after a man was hit and killed by a vehicle Thursday night.
Police believe the man, approximately in his 50s, was lying in the street prior to being hit at Glendale and 75th avenues at about 8 p.m.
Witnesses saw the man lying in the roadway and were on their way over to check on him when several eastbound vehicles approached, according to Glendale police Sgt. Jay O'Neill. A silver SUV was unable to avoid a collision with the man.
The SUV was occupied by a 38-year-old male driver, a 37-year-old female passenger and three children.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is not known at this time.
O'Neill said at this point in the investigation, it does not appear that the driver was speeding or impaired.
It's not clear why the man was in the roadway. Police said it could be anything from intoxication to a medical condition.
Glendale Avenue is closed in both directions from 73rd Avenue to 75th Avenue and will remain closed for several hours.
