SURPRISE, Ariz. -- A 16-year-old was shot in the leg Thursday afternoon and Surprise police are trying to determine how the shooting occurred.

The teen walked into a McDonald's near Greenway and Reems roads just after 4:30 p.m. and asked someone in the restaurant for help, according to Sgt. Bert Anzini with the Surprise Police Department.

Police officers responded to the scene.

The teen was taken to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound, but his injuries were not immediately life-threatening.

According to police, passersby reported a large fight among a group of teenagers across the street from the McDonald's around the same time the victim walked into the fast-food restaurant.

Police are reviewing security camera video to see if they can determine who pulled the trigger.

Detectives are talking with the injured teen to find out more information.
