PHOENIX -- A man was killed in an early morning car crash on New Year's Day after making an illegal U-turn, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Shortly after 2 a.m., a 2005 Pontiac Sunfire was westbound on Baseline Road when it made a U-turn near 44th Avenue and collided with a westbound 2011 Kia Soul.

The driver of the Pontiac, Coransen Tonechine, was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Tonechine's 34-year-old female passenger and the Kia's 29-year-old female driver were not injured.

It was unknown Wednesday whether Tonechine was impaired.
