TEMPE, Ariz. -- Tempe police are searching for a suspect who held up a jewelry store at gunpoint Monday evening inside Arizona Mills Mall. The robber got away with thousands of dollars in merchandise.

It happened at about 5 p.m. Police say the mall was busy and filled with shoppers when the suspect walked into the Capri Jeweler and pulled a gun.

The suspect reportedly waited until one of the store employees was showing a customer a piece of jewelry valued at about $10,000.

When that customer walked away, the suspect stepped in, showed his gun, and grabbed the pricey piece of jewelry, fleeing the store with it. Multiple police officers arrived on scene to search the mall, but the suspect was not located.

"Obviously, this person is very dangerous, to come into a mall like this with a handgun," said Sgt. Michael Pooley of the Tempe Police Department. "That's something that we don't see very often. What we do have is some very good pictures of this individual."

Police have called other jewelers in the area to have them remain on the lookout for the suspect. Detectives are also looking at surveillance video to determine if he's working with an accomplice.

The suspect is described as a black male in his early 20s with a thin build and 6 feet 2 inches to 6 feet 5 inches tall. Anybody with information is asked to contact the Tempe Police Department at 480-350-8311.
