MESA, Ariz. -- The police officer who first responded to the abduction of a girl in Mesa on Sunday bought the girl a new bicycle.

Officer Jonathon Appel found the frightened 8-year-old girl in an alley and she ran into his arms. She was crying and obviously shaken.

The suspect was arrested 45 minutes later.

Since the suspect had handled the bicycle the girl was riding, police had to seize it for evidence. As Officer Appel dealt with the family, he was moved by their situation and this terrible incident.

The following day, he returned to the family, took them to Walmart, where he purchased a new bicycle for the little girl out of his own pocket.

"I did not want her to be without a bike for Christmas," said Officer Appel, "I wanted her to have a new bike, to which she could affix new and happier memories."
